The Pre-Nursing Studies QQI Level 5 Major Award is designed to enhance learners understanding and awareness of the roles and responsibilities carried out by a professional nurse. It is a preparatory study course that provides you with a progression route for further training and enables you to apply through the CAO and UCAS for degree programmes in BSc General Nursing, Mental Health, Intellectual Disability, Children’s & General Nursing or Social Care in Ireland and Britain. The course introduces students to common subjects studied in the first year of the BSc Nursing Degree Programme. It also provides you with the qualification to work as a Qualified Healthcare Assistant.
A Nursing Studies Qualification equips the learner with the skills, knowledge and competence to progress towards further training in the BSc Undergraduate Nursing or Social Care degree programmes at University Level. Students can also work in the multiple environments in the Healthcare sector as a Qualified Healthcare Assistant.
The primary focus of this course is to provide students with the opportunity to progression to further training in the BSc Nursing Degree Programmes to become a Qualified Nurse or Social Care Worker.
A student can also become a Qualified Healthcare Assistant on completion of this course and work in a variety of Healthcare settings.

There are no specific entry criteria for this programme for Mature students or individuals who already work in the Health sector.
Junior / Leaving Certificate standard or appropriate QQI/FET Qualification or equivalent (This is only applicable for students under 21 years old)
English Language Proficiency Test where deemed appropriate or an IELTS score of 5.0 (This is not applicable to English Native Speakers)
Grade O6 in ordinary level Maths is mandatory for entry to Nursing Degree programmes in Ireland and Grade O5 in Ordinary level Maths for entry to UK Degree programmes.
