The CIW Web Design Professional includes CIW Web Design Specialist and CIW E-Commerce Specialist.

The CIW Web Design Series is ideal for entry-level or experienced professionals who work in the fields of Web site design, e-commerce and graphic design. Entrepreneurs who want to be able to develop and manage their business online benefit from this series as well. Having a working knowledge in the areas of Web design and e-commerce is a must for any Web Design Professional.

The CIW Web Design Specialist course is for the individual who wants to develop the skills necessary to specialise in Web site design. In this course, you will build upon your basic Web authoring skills to learn the essentials and best practices of Web design, including design theory, tools and technologies.

Certified CIW Web Design Professionals must prove their understanding in the areas of Web site design and e-commerce. They must be able to develop and maintain Web sites using authoring and scripting languages, create content and digital media, and employ standards and technologies for business-to-business and business-to-consumer e-commerce Web sites.

E-Commerce Specialist teaches you how to conduct business online and manage the technical issues associated with constructing an e-commerce Web site. You will learn about the similarities and differences between traditional and electronic commerce, and you will explore e-commerce technologies at various levels of sophistication.

Learners with little or no background in Web design should consider starting with the CIW Site Development Foundations course to learn the basics of Web site authoring and development.

The requirements for entry as follows:

Learners taking this course need a basic understanding of Internet functionality and tools, and X/HTML.
No pre-requisite courses or certifications are required prior to taking this course or the corresponding certification exam.  However, the course and exam are challenging and comprehensive
CIW offers the Web Foundations Associate curriculum to provide the base of foundational X/HTML and Internet knowledge necessary for this course. The CIW Foundations courses are not required, but for many candidates they are extremely helpful.

The following technical requirements apply to this online course: 128MB of RAM; Windows 2000, 2003, XP, Vista, Minimum screen resolution 800×600, Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher; Windows Media Player 9.0 or higher; Flash 8.0 or higher; 56K minimum connection; broadband (256 kpbs or higher) connection recommended; Javascript, DHTML and cookies enabled; Sound card with speakers or headphones strongly recommended.


In this Web Design Specialist course, you will work with popular production tools such as Microsoft Expression Web, and Adobe Dreamweaver and Flash. You will study design and development technologies such as Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), Extensible Mark-up Language (XML), JavaScript, Java applets, Dynamic HTML, plug-ins, multimedia and databases. You will also explore the extensibility of design tools, incompatibility issues surrounding these tools, and the functionality of current Web browsers.

The CIW Web Design series includes three certifications. A learner can earn either one overall exam or two separate specialist-level certifications individually.
