Game Analysis Design

This course is for those who are Computer users - interested in understanding Game Design Development and Animation and for those who wish to get a solid foundation in this field with excellent opportunities for progression.


The Game Analysis Design award will enable the learner to acquire the knowledge, skills and competence necessary to work independently and under supervision in a games development work environment or to progress to further or higher education and training.

Module Units

History of the Games Industry

  • An outline history of the games industry including:
  • Spacewar!, Pong,  Wolfenstein 3D and Half-Life, retro games and the modern era
  • Historically important games and their impact on the industry
  • Technological changes and their impact on game development

Game Analysis

  • Core game elements including: narrative, gameplay and interaction
  • The relationship between rules and mechanics
  • Analyse a sample game in terms of narrative, gameplay and interaction
  • Propose gameplay changes that could be made based on the analysis

Game Development Practice

  • The functionality and capabilities of a game engine
  • An overview of the game engine interface
  • ntroduce the asset pipeline and importing from other programs
  • An understanding of scripting within a game engine to add functionality
  • The steps required to compile the finished game for a chosen platform
  • Develop a game prototype that includes a sample level, gameplay, narrative and user interaction

A combination of module appropriate assessment procedures will facilitate the assessment of learning outcomes of this Game Analysis Design Course. David Williams is currently involved in PhD research in Technology Enhanced Learning and has an MA Learning and Teaching, a PGDip Learning and Teaching, a BSc(Hons) Computing in Multimedia Systems, a BSc Computing in Multimedia Programming and a Dip IT Network and System Administration.

David is a Training Specialist in large multi-cultural global IT and BPO services. In the past decade his clients have listed some of the largest corporate network and IT solution providers in the world as well as the worlds largest search engine provider. 

Over recent years David has worked with multiple startup companies including accounting firms, film production and a variety of retailers, providing IT consultation, Multimedia design and development solutions.
