The aim of the Training & Development Special Purpose Award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to identify training and development needs at an organisation and/ or individual level, to devise a training plan and to explore the scope of training and development design to meet those needs. 

To achieve the Special Purpose Award Level 6, you must successfully complete 2 Modules - Training Needs Identification & Design and Training Delivery & Evaluation. Each Module can be taken as a standalone course.

The programme aims to familiarise learners with the theories and concepts of delivery and evaluation of training interventions as well as being aware of a range of legislation, equality and diversity issues.

The Training & Development Special Purpose Award Course is suitable, but not restricted to:

Learners who want to develop a career in training and development 
People who wish to develop training programmes
Managers who want to learn about the role of Training and Development in their business sectors
Adult learners who are interested in designing training as part of community development projects.
Achievement of this award will enable the learner to progress to other appropriate programmes leading to awards at the next or higher levels of the National Framework of Qualifications.

The purpose of this award is to enable the learner to acquire the knowledge, skill and competence to identify training and development needs and to deliver and evaluate a training intervention within a range of training and development contexts.

Programme 1: 6S3325 - Training Needs, Identification and Design

Unit 1: The Context of Training and Development

  • Explain the context of Training and Development.
  • Understand the role of Training and Development in a changing workplace.
  • Discuss the role of quality assurance in training and development
  • Explain the accreditation process for training programmes and discuss how it compliments the National Framework of Qualifications and the European Qualifications Framework.
  • Identify a range of professional organisations and discuss their role in the provision of quality assured training and development interventions.

Unit 2: Adult Learning Theory and Motivation

  • Critique the key theorists who are instrumental in the development of the theory of adult learning.
  • Identify and discuss the range of adult learners and what motivates them to take part in training and development programmes.
  • Discuss the learning styles of adults and how these can be utilised in the design of a training interventions.
  • Explain how the professional trainer can assist the learner to maximise the strategic benefits from a training programme.

Unit 3: The Role of Instructional Systems Design in Training and Development

  • Identify key developments of systems approach to instructional design and the growth in demand for eLearning.
  • Discuss a range of instructional systems design models
  • Assess the usefulness in a given training and development intervention

Unit 4: Identification and Analysis of Strategic Training and Development needs

  • Understand the methodology (quantitive and qualitative) of an effective training needs Analysis
  • Integrate training needs with strategic developmental objectives.
  • Create documentation for production of researched, cost effective training recommendations.
  • Set appropriate learning outcomes for a training and development intervention

Unit 5: Designing a Training Plan

  • Produce a ‘fit for purpose’ detailed training plan as a road map for a training programme.
  • Assess effective time management practices reflecting the learner needs during the training  programme.
  • Identify appropriate training aids and techniques that suit a specific training programme.
  • Implement a cost benefit analysis for a proposed training intervention.

Programme 2 - 6S3326 - Training Delivery and Evaluation

Unit 6: Managing a Training and Development Programme

  • Identify and explain the relevant statutory legislation, professional best practice and operational procedures that relate to training and development programmes.
  • Designing and implement a training events calendar.
  • Identify training opportunities and produce a tender for a proposed training and development intervention.

Unit 7: The Role of the Professional Trainer

  • Achieve the creation of a learning environment based upon respect for and trust of adult learners.
  • Demonstrate a professional trainers demeanor during the training and development of  adult learners.
  • Identify a range of impediments to learning and utilise the skills and techniques to address these impediments and achieve the stated learning and development objectives.
  • Implement a training programme in a professional and ethical manner.

Unit 8: Delivering a Training Intervention

  • Demonstrate creative quality assured training and communication skills (effective  listening).
  • Enhance professional presentation skills.
  • Discuss and demonstrate effective time management skills reflective of the Learners understanding of the material content during the training programme.
  • Produce quality assured, informative training materials/ manuals.
  • Organise the training environment to suit the needs of the training programme

Unit 9: Evaluating a Training Programme

  • Reflect upon your training technique and competencies and assess your training using a  range of evaluation methods.
  • Evaluate a given training intervention, critique the approach taken and deliver relevant  feedback to the trainer
  • Undertake an analysis of a training programme and produce a ‘lessons learnt’ assessment of the intervention with appropriate recommendations.

Unit 10: Integrating Evaluations into Training and Development

  • Select an appropriate training feedback technique to support a participants performance in the workplace.

Assessment:  A combination of module appropriate assessment procedures will facilitate the assessment of learning outcomes of this Training & Development Level 6 SPA.  These methods will include a combination of continuous assessment processes such as assignments, collection of work, learner records, projects and skills demonstration.

Protection of Enrolled Learners
The Qualifications and Quality Assurance (Education and Training) Act 2012 Part 6 requires that all programmes of 3 months or more duration have in place arrangements for the Protection of Enrolled Learners to ensure learners have the opportunity to complete their programme of study. Dorset College has made arrangements with at least two other providers to comply with this legal obligation.
