Career Opportunities & Progression

On successful completion of this course, the participant will have achieved a FETAC Legal Studies Major Award at LEVEL 5. Graduates of this course who obtain five or more distinctions are eligible to apply to Dublin City University (DCU) for a place on their BCL in Civil Law (Law & Society) Degree programme. Mature student graduates of this course (over 23 years of age on year of entry) are also eligible to apply to Trinity College, Dublin (TCD) and University College Dublin (UCD) for entry as a mature student on to their Law Degree programmes. Graduates of this course can expect to find employment opportunities in the legal environment, banking, insurance, local business and government, credit unions, auctioneers.

 

FETAC Certificate in Legal Studies Level 5

The FETAC Legal Studies Certificate Level 5 Course has been developed for those who have an interest in legal studies who wish to develop their general knowledge of the basic concepts of Irish law. The programme is suitable for those from a non-legal background or those whose activities involve them in the practical aspects of law and legislation in the workplace.  It also serves as a route for further legal education at third level.  On successful completion of this course, the participant will have achieved a FETAC Legal Studies Major Award at LEVEL 5. The course is taught by highly experienced and qualified Solicitors and Barristers.

Pre-requisites

This legal Studies course is open to all with Level 5 Certificate, Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences.  A good standard of English and good literacy skills are essential.

Course Aim

The Legal Studies Course Aims to:

  • To develop a general understanding of the Irish legal system.
  • To evaluate the impact of the law on your personal and professional lives.
  • To develop skills in evaluation and analysis.
  • To be familiar with legal language, procedures and documents.
  • To appreciate the importance of respecting confidentiality in all legal communications and business transactions.
  • To provide you with a general understanding of the main elements of law that impact on business from a theoretical basis and on the practical applications in a business organisation.
  • To provide you with a thorough understanding of the principles of criminal law and to enable you to appreciate the role of criminal law in your personal and professional lives.
  • To provide you with the skills and knowledge to promote and maintain safety and health in the working environment.
  • To provide you with a general understanding of the main elements of industrial relations that impact on organisations from a theoretical basis and its application in the business environment.
  • To achieve an in-depth knowledge of the legal principles upon which the insurance market is based and how they influence current insurance practice.

A minimum of 80 hours work experience to be completed during the course in a legal or business environment.

Assessment

The Assessment of the Legal Studies course includes a  combination of module appropriate assessment procedures will facilitate the assessment of learning outcomes of the course.  These methods will include a combination of final written examinations and continuous assessment processes such as assignments, collection of work, learner records, projects and skills demonstrations.
